Robert Joyce has been the Executive Director for the Rapid City Arts Council as well as the Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society, for which he served for the latter for over twenty years. He helped to establish the Sioux Falls JazzFest into one of the largest festivals in the United States featuring Jazz, Blues and Rock artists with attendance numbers over 100,000 people.
Joyce is also an accomplished composer, producer, author and educator. He has over 30 years of teaching at Augustana University and also the University of South Dakota, UC and is a popular OLLI presenter with a history of over ten years of presenting to Osher Lifelong Learning Institute members in the Midwest.
He is the author of the book So You Want to Start A Festival: How to Make Your Event a Community Success, Culturally and Economically. Joyce is also a sought after speaker, lecturer, adjudicator and consultant. He has his Bachelors of Arts and Masters of Arts Degrees from Augustana University and makes his home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

This class will explore some of the top Jazz recordings (and the artists who made them) of the 20th Century and reveal some of the behind-the-scenes details of these great works of art. This course will investigate artists Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington-- just to name a few. Music and video samples will be part of this PowerPoint lecture and discussion. Learn how these amazing musicians created some of the greatest and very best music in the last 100 years! It’s sometimes rare when music critics and the music fans agree, but in this case, music lovers and music journalists are aligned perfectly. Here's your chance to finally put that playlist of great jazz music together in a fun and interesting setting. This lecture series will be presented via Zoom.
