Literature

Taylor Hagood, Ph.D., was the 2013–2014 Lifelong Learning Society Distinguished Professor of Arts and Letters and is Professor of American Literature at Florida Atlantic University. He received his Ph.D. in United States Literature and Culture from the University of Mississippi, where he was the Frances Bell McCool Fellow in Faulkner Studies. Professor Hagood has authored four books: “Faulkner’s Imperialism: Space, Place, and the Materiality of Myth”; “Secrecy, Magic, and the One-Act Plays of Harlem Renaissance Women Writers”; “Faulkner, Writer of Disability” (winner of the C. Hugh Holman Award for Best Book in Southern Studies); and “Following Faulkner: The Critical Response to Yoknapatawpha’s Architect.” In 2009–2010, he was a Fulbright Professor in the Amerika Institut at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, Germany, and he was awarded the 2010–2011 Scholar of the Year Award at the Assistant Professor level.

La Belle Epoque was the "Beautiful Era" of art and culture in France at the turn of the twentieth century. The movement's epicenter, Paris, saw a gathering of tremendous talent, a new artistic vision of the world, and a bohemian way of living that paved the way for Modernism. In this series, Professor Taylor Hagood will delve into depths of this period, examining the political, cultural, and social forces that created it and exploring its art, music, literature, technological innovations, and salon nightlife. Prepare to enter a glittering, ravishing world of excitement.

  2. Technology - From innovations in medicine to development of film, Paris's technological and financial strength laid the groundwork for cultural advancement.
  3. Cabaret - A look at La Belle Epoque's salon nightlife, from the Folies Bergere to the Moulin Rouge
  4. Composers and Dancers - La Belle Epoque saw the emergence of major composers, including Debussy, Ravel, and Satie, as well as ballet keyed to their works.
  5. Painters and Sculptors - This lecture presents the rich artistic output of Toulouse-Lautrec, Rousseau, Rodin, Dalou, and many others.
  6. Architecture and Design - La Belle Epoque saw the development of Art Nouveau, and this lecture examines the ways it shaped the look of Paris.
  7. Literature - From Collette to Rimbaud, the Beautiful Era produced exquisite works of literary art.
  8. Legacy - This final lecture discusses the end of La Belle Epoque and its impact on the future.

Great Books

Harlem Renaissance

The Great Books series returns with its smaller book club setting, this time focusing on books of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. We will begin with the unusual blend of poetry, fiction, and visual art that is Jean Toomer's Cane. Next, we will read the classic Nella Larsen novel, Passing. Richard Wright's Native Son follows, and then we will conclude with the beautiful and haunting story of African American life in the United States and in France after World War I, Claude McKay's Banjo. Seating is limited for this series.
