Mehmet Gurses, Ph.D., joined
the Department of Political
Science at Florida Atlantic
University in 2007 after
completing his doctorate from
the University of North Texas.
An expert on Middle East
politics, Professor Gurses
specializes in ethnic and religious conflict, post-civil
war peace building, post-civil war democratization,
and Islamist parties in the Middle East.
Professor Gurses frequently speaks to area communities
on a range of topics relating to the Middle East. He is
the author of “Anatomy of a Civil War: Sociopolitical
Impacts of the Kurdish Conflict in Turkey” and co-editor
of “Conflict, Democratization, and the Kurds: Turkey,
Iran, Iraq, and Syria.” He has published extensively in
journals such as International Interactions; Social Science Quarterly; Civil Wars; Defense and Peace Economics; Democratization; International Studies Perspectives; Nationalism and Ethnic Politics; Conflict Management and Peace Science; Politics and Religion; and Political Research Quarterly.

War in the Middle East: Old Rivalries, New Alliances
As the Middle East is undergoing important changes, three main blocs have emerged to compete for the future of the region. The first coalition comprises Iran and its allies, ranging from the Houthis in Yemen to Hezbollah in Lebanon and to the Alawite-dominated Asad regime in Syria. The second group represents the pro-status quo states and is led by the Saudi-Emirati-Egyptian bloc. The third bloc is led by Erdogan’s Turkey and is supported by the Muslim Brotherhood and Qatar. As the power struggle between these blocs manifests itself in different forms and shapes, they also need to account for other regional (i.e., Israel) and global powers (i.e., U.S.A. and Russia). This lecture aims to examine this complex situation and its implications for the U.S.A. as well as Israel.
