Literature

Taylor Hagood, Ph.D., was the 2013–2014 Lifelong Learning Society Distinguished Professor of Arts and Letters and is Professor of American Literature at Florida Atlantic University. He received his Ph.D. in United States Literature and Culture from the University of Mississippi, where he was the Frances Bell McCool Fellow in Faulkner Studies. Professor Hagood has authored four books: “Faulkner’s Imperialism: Space, Place, and the Materiality of Myth”; “Secrecy, Magic, and the One-Act Plays of Harlem Renaissance Women Writers”; “Faulkner, Writer of Disability” (winner of the C. Hugh Holman Award for Best Book in Southern Studies); and “Following Faulkner: The Critical Response to Yoknapatawpha’s Architect.” In 2009–2010, he was a Fulbright Professor in the Amerika Institut at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, Germany, and he was awarded the 2010–2011 Scholar of the Year Award at the Assistant Professor level.

Joseph Urgo, Ph.D., is a first generationcollege student. He has a B.A. in PoliticalScience from Haverford College, an M.A. inLiberal Studies from Wesleyan University(Connecticut), and an M.A. and Ph.D. inAmerican Civilization from Brown University.In 2000, he was appointed Chair of the Department ofEnglish at the University of Mississippi. In 2006, he wasrecruited to be Vice President of Academic Affairs and Deanof Faculty at Hamilton College (NY). In 2010, he began hisrole as President of St. Mary’s College of Maryland. He iscurrently Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs atthe University of North Carolina Asheville.

Joseph R. Urgo, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute’s 2020 Scholar-in-Residence, has been deeply involved in higher education for decades as professor, administrator and consultant. In this event moderated by Professor Taylor Hagood, Urgo will discuss the current state of higher education, its leadership needs and its future. One of the main arteries of the nation and the world’s condition is its education, but large questions loom as to the nature of educational structures in our moment. Urgo will field audience questions at this event.

Join Professor Taylor Hagood and his college professor, Joseph R. Urgo, for this special one-time presentation made possible by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute’s Scholar-in-Residence Program. These two world-renowned scholars of the texts of Nobel Prize-winning author William Faulkner will present the writer and his works and stress the vitality of his writing and of literature generally in our present world. This unique event offers a glimpse into the scholarly world and the development of a scholarly career, while at the same time giving insight into one of the world’s greatest writers. In the process, Hagood and Urgo will make their case for the value of reading and studying literature.
