Megan Davis, Ph.D.

Aquaculture

Megan Davis’ fascination for the ocean began as a young girl collecting shells along the beaches of her native Australia. After moving to Florida, she sailed many summers to the Bahamas with her family. These activities cemented her passion for the ocean and sea life, especially, the queen conch. After graduating with a a bachelor’s degree in aquaculture and environmental science, she headed to the Turks and Caicos Islands for 10 years. There, she became a co-founder and chief scientist for the world’s first conch farm. Over the past decades, Megan has combined her strengths in aquaculture, fisheries, marine science, education and business to lead several team projects throughout the Caribbean and Florida. She graduated with her Ph.D. from Florida Institute of Technology and joined FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute in 1996. Megan is a Research Professor in the Aquaculture and Stock Enhancement Program. She enjoys combining her hobby for cooking with sharing information about healthy food choices, which include sustainable seafood and sea vegetables.

Ocean Entrées: Eat Your Sea Vegetables!

Growing rapidly in 50 countries, the farming of aquatic plants is overwhelmingly comprised of farmed seaweeds, also known as sea vegetables. Seaweeds are used in the food industry, animal feed, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI) is a leader in growing sea vegetables as part of its Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) system. They effectively remove the nutrients that are produced from the marine fish, shrimp and other species grown in the system and, in turn, yield highly productive and desirable crops. HBOI is studying the nutritional value of the IMTA sea vegetables for human consumption. During this presentation, you will learn about the value of sea vegetables as highly nutritious food and good choices for feeding the world. A sea vegetable cooking demonstration will be part of the presentation, and you will receive the recipes to prepare tasty ocean entrées at home.
