The Nobel Peace Prize

Since its first award in 1901, the Nobel Peace Prize has provided international recognition of courage and achievement in making this world a better place. This lecture will give an overview of how the benefactor Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, developed his namesake prize. The winners give insights about the course of history as well as a laboratory of daring defiance of the odds in the struggle for humanity. The lecture examines the determined lives of winners including president Barack Obama (2009) and Jimmy Carter (2002), as well as other politicians like Nelson Mandela (1993) and Lech Walesa (1983). Luminaries such as Elie Wiesel (1986) and Dr. Martin Luther King (1964) also deserve attention, but so do less well known activists such as Rigoberta Menchu Tum (1992), Carl Von Ossietzsky (1935), and Jane Addams (1931). Also addressed are the process of picking the winners and reasons for noted absences from the list, including Mahatma Gandhi and Eleanor Roosevelt.
