Incivility and Dysfunction in American Politics
Incivility in politics is not new. Indeed, democracy is
an inherently messy process and the nation has long
struggled with civil strife, racism, violence and
scandals. However, it might be argued that the
gridlock, hyper-partisanship and mean-spiritedness
in today's politics are, in many ways, different. We
will explore numerous historical examples, identify
the root causes of incivility, consider numerous
studies and polls to determine the nature of the
situation today, and seek solutions and lessons that
will help us find a path forward for the American
body politic.
