Art Appreciation

Terryl Lawrence, Ed.D., earned her doctoral degree in art and education from Columbia University and has had many exhibitions of her paintings and photographs in New York and Florida. She has published several articles, was a New York fashion designer and photographer, wrote the preface to Chaim Potok’s “Artist in Exile,” and has taught photography and art at C.W. Post College and SUNY Empire State College. She is a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Fellow in the Humanities. Professor Lawrence currently teaches Art History and Mythology at Palm Beach State and Broward Colleges.

The United States of America has a rich and varied History of Art. Beginning with the early settlers and leading to the wealth of creativity happening today, our nation is filled with visual commentary of the times in which artists live. This course will examine the imagery that has enriched our nation and ourselves.
Eight Lectures
  1. The Beginnings - From primitive art to profound.
  2. America After the Fall - Painting in the 1930s including Edward Hopper, Grant Wood and Georgia O’Keeffe.
  3. Galleries Galore - New York City as the hotbed of Abstraction and Imagination with Miami not far behind.
  4. Inspired by Dance - Its representation in American art by Thomas Hart Benton, Barbara Morgan, Elie Nadelman, and others.
  5. American Architecture Has Led the World - Constructions and ideas of Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Meier and colleagues.
  6. African-American Art - A different vision by painters, sculptors and photographers, such as Hale Woodruff, Gordon Parks and Kerry James Marshall.
  7. American Impressionism Yesterday and Today - The Impressionists laid the groundwork for much of the avant-garde painting that followed. William Merritt Chase, Childe Hassam, Frederick Carl Frieseke and more.
  8. America the Beautiful - Landscape painting from yesterday to today by Frederick Church, Fairfield Porter, Richard Diebenkorn and others.
