International Films that Speak Flavorful Romance

Lively, sly and sometimes intense, each dips you into the mesmerizing essence of the film’s country

Diversity of story and country create a mix that highlights the joys and challenges of love. In each film, hailed by both critics and audiences alike, there is the opportunity to step into not just the ways of other countries, but also age ranges, attitudes, circumstances unlikely in our own lives. Handsomely photographed, ideally directed, perfectly acted, we are drawn into each scenario, once again feeling the conditions of love.
Four Lectures
  1. Queen to Play - France, 2011, 1 hr. 41 min.) Kevin Kline and Sandrine Bonnaire square off in this stylish and sophisticated dramedy of newfound passions and mid-life triumphs, set on the postcard-perfect isle of Corsica. Lovely, repressed and quietly intelligent. Directed by Marion Laine. Sub-titled.
  2. Run Lola Run - (Germany, 1999, 1 hr, 21 min.) A breathtaking race against the clock, Run Lola Run straps director Tom Tykwers' playfully hip sensibilities to a fun-filled mix of romance, thrills, and action as his tireless heroine pounds the pavement and racks her brain to save her lover from danger. Dubbed.
  3. Lunchbox - (India, 2014, 1hr. 44 min.) This is a clever charmer that is made with love — just like the food in the titular lunchbox. Better yet, it's just as delectable. Khan's performance is in itself a tasty buffet, filled with a simmering anger, desperate loneliness, and a biting sense of humor. Directed by Ritesh. Batra. Minimally sub-titled.
  4. A Separation - (Iran, 2012, 2 hr., 30 min.) Set in contemporary Iran, A Separation is an insightful drama about the dissolution of a marriage. The audience gains both a great insight into modern Iran and a powerful insight into the human condition. Written and directed by Asghar Farhadi. Sub-titled.
