Music Appreciation

Harvey Granat leads an exciting life as an entertainer, a music historian and an investment banker. He regularly performs at leading supper clubs, hotels and other cultural venues such as Lincoln Center, Canyon Ranch, McCallum Theater, Norton Museum and many others. He presents a very popular series on the American Songbook at the 92nd Street Y in New York. Harvey produced four-time Academy Award winning songwriter Sammy Cahn on Broadway and, by Cahn’s invitation, served on the board of the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Harvey has amassed an important collection of original letters and manuscripts of some of these Composing Greats, including the original manuscript of Gershwin’s “They Can’t Take That Away From Me.”

Burt Bacharach is a 3 time Academy Award and Grammy Award winning songwriter who invented a new sound. Among the unforgettable hits that you'll hear in live performance are: RAINDROPS KEEP FALLINN ON MY HEAD, DO YOU KNOW THE WAY TO SAN JOSE, ALFIE, WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS LOVE and many more. We'll look at his writing partnerships with Hal David and Carole Bayer Sager, his discovery of The Carpenters and Dionne Warwick, and talk about his personal life including marriages to Angie Dickenson and Carole Bayer Sager. He enjoyed great success both in pop music, film and Broadway along with his extensive concert work. We'll see and hear examples of each of these.

George Gershwin

America's Musical Genius

George Gershwin is considered, by most, to be America's leading composer. His extraordinary talent can be seen and heard on Broadway, in films and in concert halls. He had the rare ability to write jazz, symphony and opera. In this class you'll hear live performances of SWANEE, SOMEBODY LOVES ME, I GOT RHYTHM, I'VE GOT A CRUSH ON YU, EMBRACEABLE YOU, BUT NOT FOR ME among many, along with selections from PORGY AND BESS and special video of Gershwin in concert performance. He crammed more into his 38 years than any other composer.

Harvey Granat is a Gershwin authority. His great collection of Gershwin letters and manuscripts is now housed in the Library of Congress as: The HARVEY GRANAT GEORGE AND IRA GERSHWIN COLLECTION.

Cole Porter is considered one of the greatest composer/lyricists in the history of American music. This course will explore his life and music in live performance of some of his great songs, inside stories behind the songs, films and Broadway shows and special videos of show business greats. You'll hear NIGHT AND DAY, I'VE GOT YOU UNDER MY SKIN, YOU'RE THE TOP, JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS and many more.

Unlike other composers, he came from wealth and lived the good life. We hear it in his songs.
